The Overview Effect [4K]

Happy New Year! Well it's been a while huh? After almost a year of inactivity I am finally back to release a new animated wallpaper thanks to a week long Christmas break which gave me enough time to actually do some wallpaper animation.

This animated wallpaper has been in the works for a very long time. I had the idea of animating this wallpaper way back in March of 2024, which means it has been approximately been 9-10 months since I started working on this project. As to why I took so long? Well, partly because of procrastination but mostly because I really had no time to animate due to the nature of military service and me spending all of my weekdays in camp.

Now, onto the wallpaper itself. If you are wondering what is the meaning of the title of this wallpaper, The Overview Effect is a real life effect experienced by some astronauts when they look back at the Earth from space. Those astronauts reported that they experienced a strong sense of euphoria, awe, and appreciation for the Earth itself, along with an increased sense of unity with humankind and the Earth as a whole. I always have been fascinated by this particular phenomenon, and when I stumbled across this artwork back in March I thought that this would be an incredible wallpaper to be named after this particular effect.

Now, I have to admit that the title is a bit misleading as the effect is originally experienced by astronauts in space viewing the Earth, while the setting of the wallpaper is on Earth with a girl looking upon the heavens and the shooting stars descending from it. But I believe that the emotions that those astronauts experienced, the overwhelming euphoria and awe, is something not exclusive to the Overview Effect but can be felt elsewhere, like this particular wallpaper. Hence, even though I am rusty as hell when it comes to animating wallpapers because of my long hiatus, I hope that with both the beauty of this artwork and with my animation skills, I am able to transmit those emotions into the people who downloaded and viewed this wallpaper I animated, and perhaps give them an inkling of what it would be like to stare back at the Earth from space, at a distance.
