Games that do something a bit different - games that stray away from the usual conventions by taking risks, trying something new, or twisting up familiar genres or mechanics in a unique and original way.

As much as I'm a fan of a game that exemplifies its genre, what really gets me is a game that isn't afraid to take a risk and try something new. That ranges anywhere from full-blown experimental non-games, to games that put a twist on a familiar genre, to games that aren't afraid to get a little weird.

Sometimes these games are successes, sometimes they don't quite work out, but they all share a common core: a unique vision, passionate developers, and a willingness to take chances.

I love trying these games and seeing what they do, finding out how they work, or being surprised by an unexpected turn to the unconventional. In the end, if it messes with my expectations, tickles my brain, or expands my understanding of video games (even just a little!), I come away with a positive experience.
