Garry's Mod in 2025

For those of you who don't know me (or remember me), my name is Modern.
I started playing Garry's Mod in when I was 13 years old, going by the tag ModernAccents because I thought it was fun to perform voice impressions while playing on gmod servers.

I joined the SHN community around February of 2014 (I was still 13) and played through the Imperfect Gamers era (which still has a server btw), the Original Gamers era, and the VeniVidiVici era.

I moved on to TTT and played on Revolutionary Gaming, which was a testing server for The Great North Gaming (which is active and in its 4th iteration at the time of writing this). It had its own community, independent of the main server. The owner of TGN allowed me to name and manage this community, and I did so with the help of the regular members. He also mentored me in scripting, programming, and coding Lua.

As I moved on, I used those skills to help manage and develop the multi-gamemode servers of WolfPack Industries, Sighted Gaming, and Fennec Fox Industries.

That briefly recaps nearly 5 years of gmod for me, spanning ages 13 through 18 of my life (December 2013 - September 2018). There's plenty more to tell involving console gaming and pc gaming in other games, but that wouldn't be relevant. By the time I turned 19, I felt like I had already lived a lifetime with how much I experienced within gaming communities. I struggle to fathom all that has happened over the years. Growing up and getting older makes me feel both old and young at the same time.

Somewhere in that 5 year timeline of playing, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness at age 16. I lost over 20 pounds in 2 weeks, was hospitalized for 2 months, had to drop out of high school, and completed high school through online homeschooling a year later than I was supposed to. The main thing that kept me going until I achieved medical remission in 2019, was Garry's Mod.

I'm now 25 years old, I received my bachelor's in Computer Science with a focus in Software Engineering, and I've gained experience in a few different jobs and fields. It's been almost 12 years since I first downloaded Garry's Mod and had to ask someone in the first server I loaded into why there were missing textures everywhere.

All of this is an ode to you. Even though this community was only briefly mentioned in my history, it's not to be understated that it had a profound impact on my life. My friends, Lyrea, Laken, David, and countless others, you created some of my best memories, and although we don't talk or game together anymore, I see what's going on in the lives those of you that I have on social media, and I'm so proud of you. Working on the servers associated with this community also furthered my skill and passion for software engineering, and I credit WolfPack Industries as one of the main reasons why I chose to study it in college. Thank you.

My friends and I have a small Discord server where we play games together. Most of these friends I know irl, and some we met online. About 2 weeks ago, a suggestion was made that we play Garry's Mod. Here I am now, 2 weeks later, the owner of my own server. It has 10 slots, it's password locked, and I have absolutely no intention of reviving or creating another community. It's purely for a group of friends that wanted to play games together. I thought I'd tell my story and inform y'all of the server's existence. I'll be keeping the server up indefinitely as a private and permanent way to play and as an outlet to practice and mess around with Lua.
