In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

What you learned from Sildar Hallwinter:
More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge, where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path

A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.

New rules and rescheduling

Due to schedule conflicts, the session planned for this Sunday, June 26th, has been moved to next Sunday, July 3rd, at the usual time: 8:30 PM EDT, 7:30 PM CDT.

After the next time we play, I'm planning on setting up rules about what happens if a player can't make it to a scheduled game. Unless the player/character that won't make it is important to upcoming story, or the session is very important, we would probably play on as scheduled with the absent player deciding whether their character is absent, passive, or controlled by the DM.

If the character is absent, we'll have to come up with a good reason for the character to stay behind. Perhaps working on downtime activities (such as reading, studying an object or location, crafting, fishing, hunting, foraging, etc.) depending on where they are and what they want to do. We'd also need a good way for the character to rejoin the party the following session.

If the character is passive, they'll essentially fade into the background. This solution requires some suspension of disbelief, but might be the easiest option. The character would stay with the group and we would act as if they weren't there, without coming up with any in-game explanation for this absence. Monsters don't attack the character, who returns the favor. On returning, the player resumes playing as if they were never gone.

If the character is controlled by me, the player and I would have a conversation some time before the session about what they want their character to do. Primarily, I would use their character for combat encounters. I would not use consumable items, or take unnecessary risks, unless instructed otherwise. For roleplay, unless I'm given specific instructions by the player, the character would be fairly passive, not making decisions or interacting with people unless necessary.

If the absent player can be reached during the game, they would be contacted and given the chance to give input on bigger decisions and on how to handle some encounters.

If more than one person can't make it, we'd reschedule the session.

Rescheduling

Unfortunately, something's come up and I will not be able to run the game tonight as planned. I will try to reschedule as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I've recently posted a list of resources available in Phandalin and added shopping lists to everyone's journal pages in Roll20.[app.roll20.net] The idea being that between sessions people could write down what they'd be interested in purchasing, if they wanted to. That way when we get to town you can just ask to go shopping, show me the list (so I can make sure nothing too crazy is on it), take the right amount of coins out of your inventory, and add the items listed.

Interactions with vendors and workers can still be roleplayed when wanted, of course, but this should help speed the process up significantly.
