Why was real root beer banned?
TIL a key ingredient in root beer (sassafras root) was found to be carcinogenic and banned in 1960 by the FDA. Artificial versions are now generally used instead. Jul 26, 2010
Tastes like it might be enhanced with a high % alcochol 'mixer'? Anyone tried it? I might try later.
Ice cream - yum.
Better with ice cream.
There's loads of A&W on Amazon.
As others said, different root beer brands can taste vastly different, unfortunately. Root beer floats are super easy to make. However, if you're wanting the best taste; due to being new to it all, it might be best to find an establishment that has root beer floats on the menu. But that's probably hard to find.

Try a Olipop Root Beer, with only <5g of sugar! It won't crash your blood-sugar levels. And they actually taste good!
Olipop is a popular brand of prebiotic soda designed as a healthier alternative to traditional sodas, packed with plant-based fibers to support gut health, featuring low sugar content (around 2-5g), 35-45 calories, and a range of classic soda flavors like Vintage Cola, Root Beer, and Ginger Ale, sweetened naturally with fruit, stevia, and cassava syrup. It offers bubbly refreshment while providing functional benefits for digestion, though some users might experience initial gas or bloating as their bodies adjust to the fiber.
Sadly, real sassafras isn't used anymore, because ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ "study" with TERRIBLE methodology claimed it's bad for you.
