Very fun game. You're a bounty hunter tracking down some bad characters across the universe. Once you find them, you have a colorful, ship-to-ship shootout, earn vacation points (mostly for upgrades), and then fulfill the next contract. It's pretty straightforward and addictive. Graphics and music are serviceable, but there's no voice acting. The difficulty level seems about right for a reasonable challenge,

At its core, Lonestar is a rogue-lite game in which you advance by failing forward. That is, with each successful or unsuccessful playthrough, you unlock more items, upgrades, and pilots that can be played during your next playthrough. Also, it's a math game and a puzzle game, in which you have to do simple calculations of damage before attacking, and you'll need to place your ship's equipment in an order that maximizes its tactical effectiveness. There are three ships for you to choose from with countless ways to configure them. In nine hours of playing thus far, there seems to be a wide variety of enemy ships to fight.

The game's shortcomings are few. One is that some of the item effects may take some time to figure out, even though the game comes with a glossary. The good thing is that the game does the math for you, even if you can't quite figure out why a weapon is doing a certain amount of damage or how it synergizes with some other piece of equipment. The other issue is that I wish that there was more than 3 ships to choose from. I have finished the game once with the Shielder ship, which seems more well rounded and understandable than the other two ships. Having 5-6 more ships to choose from would have been nice.

Overall, this is very well thought out and chill game. I have beaten it once but definitely plan to return to it.
