Early Access Review
This game feels like something I would have played in the first half of the 2000s, the peak "tycoon"/management era, and I mean that in a very good way.

I can feel how much of a labour of love it has been for the devs, and the hotfix rate is stunning. You can rest assured that this game will be supported for a long time, given that Game Dev Tycoon is still getting occasional bugfixes...

The humour is not super tiresome and mostly lands. The gameplay is fun and engaging, in both story and freeform modes. The graphics are a simplistic style done well for an overall cohesive look. Some text related stuff looks cheap (like the "press any key to start" text, but that's very minor. Some UI streamlining needed (eg: there are some very neat and lovingly animations when you click things that take a bit long once the novelty wears off). Not the cheapest early access indie title, but worth it, especially for introductory/sale price and I am looking forward to enjoying it for a long time.

I've played it for almost 5 hrs now, enough time to get a little fortress running (this isn't just a bandwagon or meme review) having played classic since 2012. It's the greatest game in history. If you're complaining that it costs $30, then wait a couple of weeks and the update will be available in Classic mode for free (without the new textures and music, but with all the other new GUI updates eg: using the mouse/wasd.

The rest of the review is for former classic players adjusting to the update:
Obviously when a whole lot of controls and GUI change there's always gonna be a re-learning curve, and there's a few weird things/inconsitencies in the massive redo of the systems that currently make some stuff a little more annoying to do eg:
- when placing stockpiles it's easy to accidentally esc out without clicking accept and having to redo it
- some things don't *currently* have a hotkey, like saying "accept"
-you can't hotkey in your workshops to queue up your jobs, you gotta find and click each one individually (but work orders are goated in the update so it's not a biggie).
- I think announcements are a bit too easy to miss at the moment.
but like I said these things happen in a massive overhaul of systems on an indie game and are usually ironed out pretty quick. I recommend buying it, it's DF. Or don't, and get classic in a few weeks. But it's definitely worth supporting the devs for their decade and a half of hard work.

I've been playing with Species for a long time, and am thrilled to see it arrive on Steam. Back when I was in high school it really helped me put the whole evolution concept together. It certainly is an indie game, and that sould be well factored into your expectations - it is the product of one very dedicated dev's hard work. It is still well and truly a work in progress, but Qu has shown over years that he is determined to keep updating it towards completion - there has already been several hotfixes in the couple of days the Steam edition has been live! Species is an incredibly powerful evolution simulator that allows for a number of different tastes. Personally I'm not an interventionist god so I like to let it chill in the background, making overall climate modification rather than messing with creatures individually, however that is also an option for those whom prefer a more 'gamelike' experience. With that I should point out that it's possibly more of a simulation than a game, and a damn fine one at that, but nonetheless may not be some people's cuppa tea and should be factored into initial expectaions.
I love it, and as a biology pre-service teacher I can see it possibly being used in schools much like KSP is used in physics clasrooms.

Buying this game in my final year of High School was the worst decision I ever made.

People are talking about game-breaking bugs, which are understandably out there, but I haven't experienced any.

It's like Pirate FTL Terraria and though it feels very Early Access, the developer has stated how commetted he is.

I am very happy with my purchase.
