Tolkien named Luthien Tinuviel "the greatest of the Eldar." This would make her the greatest elf to ever live. The reason for this is ubiquitous enough in her bloodline, for she was half maiar by her mother Melian; the Maiar were a class of angel like spirit beings that predated the founding of the world. Other examples of Maiar in various forms, to give an indication of their power, are Sauron, the balrogs, and Gandalf as well as the other wizards
