This game is YEARS old now. And still has Major Bugs and Dumb Features. Personally: My Settings won't hold. Thought maybe just me... old game... sure there's a fix. A bunch of dead ends about THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM 3-4 YEARS AGO. So change em all ya want, they reset for some reason after a few seconds. So in my situation it was the overwhelming marching music in the menu blaring back in repeatedly that made me immediately RE-uninstall it. Nope. This also means that there's no way to customize the HUD or in game info. Whatever it is... it doesn't hold I guess. Maybe with more searching there might be a fix or a Mod to deal with all that. But no one should have to mod a game to make it functional.

Also... setting up my own simple skirmish to just play on a map gave ME, the host, a "waiting for lobby" and a queue time. Not long... but still. It was as though I was having to connect some some hosting servers or something. Really not sure but... weird. Yet at that point didn't matter with the Menu Music blaring away at me I was done.

I bought this on sale a long time ago. And I'm now realizing the reason I may not have put time into it before trying again now is likely for the same issues. Don't waste you're money even now. Yes i also want a steampunkian RTS war game but this one is still to broken.

Did you LOVE Journey on PS4?
Did you play it through so many times you lost count?
Did you keep playing it long after new travelers quit passing by through the years?

You'll love this.
Cozy Cute MMO Co-op Adventure with the intent to play through and through. MANY seasonal events to return for!
Take a break from all the survivaling, crafting, killing, and ranking up... all the server and party issue.
And instead take to the skies and beautiful world of Sky: CotL!

This is a game from way back, ahead of it's time now all caught up.

All motion is relative within 3D space. Some old school camera navigation mechanics as the Z Axis takes a bit to get. Yet still solid game all around, and I'm sure there's a few Mods to up the graphics to some degree. However, even without mods the vanilla game is sill good. Some surprising ship models and lighting. It was one of the first space game to give me a sense of scale. (Although come to think of it, you may need to fiddle with it for proper modern screen ratio?)

This will not be a large fleet operation like Homeworld, nor any large galactic civilization builder. More of Silent Submarine sci-fi adventure. There are other ships, you'll have a small fleet. But once you settle into your "new ship" the gameplay will take a stealthy turn for a while. Managing between engine, weapons, shields, and...repair? (been a while...) you will need to slip in between patrols, weapons platforms, and outposts via setting 3D Nav Points. Little tricks like placing them around your area of operation so you can shift and move your ships to and from areas. Things scale up in your unexpected space adventure. The battle get bigger, the enemies more intense, You only a have a few ships, no massive fleet. But you'll be watching over internal priority levels and general behavior. And most importantly you will have detailed target and sub-target selections. Take out the shield generator, send over a boarding party, have them hit the main gun battery from inside. Move in to take out PDC from the outside so the boarding party can safely depart before the engine core they sabotaged blows up! Or hit at range with torpedoes to leave them dead in the water while you approach from the blind spot and gut them. Go stealth, get in close, and open up on them on cqc with high powered laser to shred their weapons one by one before they can urn and bring them to bare on you.

To me this game really did feel ahead of it's time. I know it taxed the hell out of my comp way back when. And I know I never got to finish the game as the 3rd act battles were very big, lots of lighting and effects... with and old school run down frame rate of 5-10fps it was just too much. There's a good chance your modern phone could play this now.

Oh yeah! and that classic tacky voice acting for some of the crew is just great!

The Quick Review for You: Yes. Good. VERY Worth 5$! But be careful, just like cheap rock it is Addictive AF!
(Because there's already thousands of positive reviews - who's really going to read this? Do kids even actually "read" any more?)

More Depth for those that aren't "tl;dr" by default in life.

One very important detail I need to make clear about myself...
I NEVER PLAY GAMES LIKE THIS. EVER. I have an appreciation for the retro art style in games. But you see, I'm a grown-ass gamer, old by most kid standards today. I grew up as a little kid with the Atari 2600 (from my older siblings) and an original NES. Lots of good memories. Yet I will never forget the wishing and waiting for the days when graphics truly advanced. Even as a teen in the 90's I knew the "3d graphics" of that early era were weak.

So at this point in life I have no taste to recapture my youth in gaming. I played a lifetime of sidescroll and sprite graphics. I've even had enough low res polygons to fill a second childhood. I DO NOT seek out old style games. I was even dismissive when I first saw VS pop up in my Steam queue, even more as it became a streaming sensation (for however long this lasts.)

Then I finally watched some, a few dudes from Neebs Gaming playing co-op (couch co-op only, no online). I really don't know why but his nudged me to checked it out. -Didn't pick up on the couch co-op only until after purchase.- Despite being disappointed that there is no online co-op (at this time?) I went with it anyway. Now I've spent way way too much time playing games alone, like any normal gamer. So at this point in life I try to avoid single-player stuff and aim for co-op potential. Which lead me to believe I'd get momentary fun out of it. Like 15 minutes. ... I was WRONG.

It IS addictive! Let me explain with my many years and console generations worth of gaming. On the surface it almost seems dumb. You don't even have a fire/attack button! You ONLY move. Everything auto-fires/deploys. The ONLY real effect you have on your loadout/weapons is what you pick when you level up! Early levels will be options for other weapons to use at the same time, or defensive things, or more subtle things like cooldown time, or duration. The MAGIC of the game comes from your choice of combos. Some of which work in conjunction to make very powerful weapons when fully upgraded. At first it feels kind of random. Yet over time there are strategies of combos. You just keep going with it.

As far as any kind of mobile game, auto-clicker, dopamine trigger games with rewarding sounds, colors, and flashing whatnot is also NOTHING I have any taste for. But this game also feeds you full of it and: I LOVE IT in this game. Those gems start rolling in by the hundreds and it's a constant jingling of points.Level ups feel rewarding. Even the health pick-ups and strike noises all are arcade perfect. The treasure chests also feel really good. The final evolved form of weapons if very rewarding.

This game has taken SO many little features from old and new genres to create this sense of perfectly distilled classic gaming. It's like a strange modern version of what you imagine all your nostalgic memories of gaming as a kid were like! (weather it be actually lived or inherited nostalgia from the gaming life) This really has taken something so simple and purified even more into basically a free-base version of oldschool gaming. Straight to the brain. The hardest part is getting my right hand to let go of the mouse since there's no use.

Oh even the music Kicks the Hell out of All the Ass! All chiptune yet so amazingly perfect for this. I always turn down the music in games... this one I forgot and I am glad!

It's also a great palette cleanser. You don't need hundreds of constant hours. Lots of rounds may only be a few minutes. 15 minutes is a good run. 30 minutes completes the level I think? But by then, if you make it to the last few minutes, you'll be in such a gaming zen state that it's a whole other thing!

The Real Review: After some actual Play

  • It's Great RIGHT out of the Box, especially for an "Early Access" release!
  • It's what you are hoping for!
  • Yes, the Bug Numbers ARE fulfilling! They did not skimp.
  • Enough downtime between engagements to provide good pacing.
  • Yes, there are big bug that drop plasma on you, and YES you can Hunt them Down.
  • Getting separated WILL get you killed and it's wonderful!
  • Everyone can Revive, but only Operators (Medics) can Heal.
  • Everyone can build, yet total is limited in amount. WORK TOGETHER.
  • If you played DRG it is that same easy to drop into Coop Play we ALL need right now.
  • Seriously, it's absolutely worth the 25$ for GREAT 16pl PvE!!!
  • We should start calling it "PvB".
  • I want to write more... but I want to go PLAY instead!

AMAZING RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.

I've played RWR since like 2012? er....2014?
Long before it was on Steam.. this little indie game came out of no where and into my gaming life! I have loved it ever since. Of course not perfect as it has expanded DRAMATICALLY from it's original scope. (Look up very early Alpha Tests) Anyway, I have openly and always been a supporter of RWR so buying the VET Pack DLC was a no brainer. I am happy to Support RWR!

Now some details:
1) The Character Skins: ONLY apply to You, NOT AI. Each Faction has new skins for each type of gear. So like the Greens get Default New Skin, plus new looks for Ghillie, EOD, Black Ops, and Bullet Vests. It's nothing major, but it does look nice after all these years of playing. And Easier to Identify Players.

2) Vehicle Skins: ONLY Apply to YOUR Air-Dropped Support. You cannot change the Skin for Field Spawned Vehicles. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Only Players who have also Purchased the Vets Pack DLC are able to use the DLC Skin Vehicles - so it effectively LOCKS OUT any player that does not own the Vets Pack. This is great when you are swarmed by FNG's (n00bs) that just try to hop in any vehicle without realizing the intense "honor system" of driving and repairing Assault Vehicles in the RWR Community. However the same dlc skin vehicle lock is a total b*tch when you run into old Battle Buddies from way back that just occasionally drop in. Because after a while you will have people that you roll really well with as an AV Crew that can no longer hop in your ride! This just happened again last night. Or the other odd effect of it: you meet a newer player, you run well together in a field spawned assault vehicle, do your thing, and eventually lose it in battle. So now you Air Drop another AV to replace it but YOU have the Vet Pack Skin and this poor new guy that's been a solid Crewmate cannot join you because they don't have the DLC... it is an issue more than you might think.

3) The Emotes are Cool. Although I have found only the Dances and Waving will loop, sometimes certain "Yays" will, the others are just a couple seconds. And things like "Salute" take too long to write and animate that it's easier to just type "07", which I do constantly. (Yes, this "07" is imported from its long use in the Elite Dangerous Community) I like the emotes, but I'd like a few more, and more looped animations for AFK or Chatting moments so your character isn't just standing there. Like Smoking, Leaning, throwing a Yo-yo, or reclining, etc.

4) This DLC ONLY Applies to Vanilla and has NO EFFECT on the other DLC skins.

If you want to Support RWR, Love it, and want a little more character in your character then 7$ to support ain't bad. If not, then don't. It's pretty simple.

To my old Battle Buddies, some from almost 10 years ago now, I think we've all got our original 10-15$ out of the deal. I think adding 7$ more is worth it. 07 And to any New Buddies I meet, sorry you can't hop in my AirDrop Ride, it's the DLC Skin that does it. See on the field.

It is what you think:
"Honey, I shrunk the Kids." + SurvivalCraft Gameplay.

Great in Solo and Fantastic Co-op!
If any of my Steam Friends are looking for friends to play with: Hit me Up.

Grounded is Great Fun. Nothing in life is perfect, so it's hard to find true "issues" with the game. It's polished.

OH, ONE: (kinda) XBOX LIVE ACCOUNT REQUIRED and YOUR FRIENDS NEED TO BE ON THAT LIST TOO.

This a one of the most well designed, easy to pick up, and eventually insanely complicated games I have ever played. By the late game you don't understand how you've come so far, or designed so much. If you already have a taste for design, logistics, emergence, and complexity theory this game will satisfy. It almost purposefully starts off as misleading simple but you find yourself ramping up very quickly with ease. The Blueprint System and eventual Drone Bot System make this game a dream to play! Eventually you start to make modular designs and slapping down huge new additions to your plant with little effort.

Yet the satisfaction is not all from huge builds and massive production. You'll find pleasure in just balancing your belt flow evenly with items through the use of splitters and mergers. Or getting the right belt speeds and robo arm usage. This gentle balancing of efficiency and distribution is like tending a highly mechanized bonsai garden.

I played my 150hrs almost non-stop! I had to stop. I loved it SO much I am afraid to play it again. XD
Get it. Get Addicted. Quit. Give it The Good Review it Deserves!
