TL:DR: If you've played any PWAA game before these three, you'll still like them. Doesn't hurt to play at all.

So I started my Ace Attorney journey with Dual Destinies and immediately fell in love with the entire series after finishing Spirit of Justice. I've even seen the anime adaptation of the first game. But, I never played the original trilogy.

Until now.

I remember reading somewhere that in the first release, you couldn't go backward in testimony. I'm glad that that was fixed in the port, but I think that takes away from how the game used to run. Something really frustrating, though, was how frequently you needed to save in the case that you messed up too often. In the newer games, once you failed a trial, you could pick it back up from where you failed. None of that was present in this trilogy, making the trial system a bit unforgiving for things not completely obvious or accidental selections. I'll say though that it's gotten me into a habit of saving my things more often.

Port and logistics aside, the first three games that jumpstart the series following the well-known attorney were a rollercoaster. The amount of drama, comedy, and suspense was just right. Personally, I'm not quite a 2D fan, but understanding wanting to preserve nostalgia, I worked through. After about two cases, the problem of playing in 2D was immediately thrown out the window, as it became a massive interest to follow along with the story. The OST was wonderful as always, and yeah some of the character audio sounded weird, but I can't expect them to rerecord all of the character voice lines just to sound better.

Now for just personal opinions that don't really have any bearing on the review. Out of all three, I think my favorite in the trilogy had to be Trials and Tribulations. It really felt like all of the cases were interconnected and really led back up to one person throughout the game. Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, along with Apollo Justice Ace Attorney do the same thing, which I love. All of the cases being interconnected by one overarching character or event just made the game feel more complete and unified. I can't really say that I hate the first game, because this is the first time that we are exposed to the characters of the series, so it should focus more on developing the characters to be seen throughout the series rather than a story. My least favorite in the trilogy, which I guess you can guess by now, was Justice for All. I just felt that there was no cohesion between the cases, and that there were just random scenarios put into place. The continuity was a nice touch, but it just didn't feel like there was anything built-upon from the first game. Also the introduction of presenting profiles as evidence in trials just made the game harder, which is a good thing, but at times became very confusing and tricky to figure out when to present them.

Very interesting puzzle game with interesting philosophical questions about the nature of life, morality, and humanity. Upon playing the game, I first thought the game was very short with only one world, but then, I found about the other two worlds, with completely different soundtracks, and then the accursed tower. Then, continuous interactions with the overbearing god and some guy who cheated the system. The scenery is breathtaking, especially in the third world. Walking around where others have once been, and then attempting to understand the reason you're there. And honestly, it's the first time I've ever seen an open world puzzle game, let alone a game that addresses major philosophical questions. All i can say, is to just play to understand.

I legit had so much fun with this game. It was definitely worth the time and money I spent on it. I would honestly recommend playing this game.

tl;dr - fun gameplay, good art and storyline, bad voice acting, more could have been done.

PROS:
  • The game has a wonderful storyline, but it is also a bit cliche. The story of someone follows their dreams while making friends and fighting adversity with a boss at the end is overused but the game makes it enjoyable nonetheless. There is even choice within the storyline, choosing whatever opponent you want to face in the grand tournament.

  • The gameplay is astounding and a breath of fresh air. The combination of strategy and fighting makes the game not get old as the game progresses. Don't forget the time constraints, as that makes the game even more challenging, racing to get as many needed ingredients in a timely fashion. The fighting aspect does take a bit to getting used to, but even then it becomes a bit easy. The puzzle aspect is very nouveau to the cooking game scene. Most cooking games are reliant on timing or speed, but this game makes cooking reliant on strategy, speed, and care. Stirring the pot in the right directions and carefully crafting your delicate masterpiece make cooking puzzles very fun.

  • Do I even need to say anything about the art? Just look at it, its beautiful. Every detail on the dishes made me sometimes salivate, they just looked good.
CONS
  • This one is pretty small but the voice acting isn't the best. The conversations feel cut and paste, and the lack of freedom lends its ability to be like a graphic novel with some gameplay element.

  • This is a bit major. The story is extremely short, took me about 10 hours total to beat the game. There is so much more that could have been done with the game, like, idk, more on Thrash or Kirin, and maybe even Ziggy idk. Maybe even more story on their lives after the end of the original story. Maybe even play through Rixal's point of view and make the blight. The game lets you play through Thrash's point of view, but it doesn't really do much to the story except to get you off of Mina for a bit. Even after that, in hindsight, Thrash's point of view would have made the game even shorter, so i guess i should say thank you. But even then, you could have done more with that portion of the game, and, like i said earlier, maybe more on the point of views on Kirin and the rest of the gang. Maybe even play through an actual Brigadier's point of view. I also almost forgot, they got this big ass map of Victusia but you literally go only to like 5 places of the map. Probably for ambience or accents but you could have used the map more. But I digress, cuz this is a review, and not a suggestion board.

All in all, I would extremely recommend the game to play, but the story just feels unfinished. I haven't even gotten to local multiplayer mainly cuz i have no friends ;-;. But I assure you, this game is just wonderful, and if a mobile adaptation to the game comes out, I would gladly play it.

7.8 / 10 would play again

Possibly the only problem I have with this game is the inability to upgrade from starter upon initial purchase. Thats the only problem, so dont get it. Besides starter edition, the game is really well designed. It's like call of duty but you actually need a brain to play.

Board games are meant to make friends not ruin them.
