Ah, okay. So I guess realistically I can't expect to finish the game at like level 20 or something as in Battle Brothers! ;)

My highest-leveled units are at level 9, exp slows down a lot at that point.

By the way, what levels are your main character and strongest units? I am wandering whether I should keep leveling maniacally, given that the AI apparently also levels with you.

Got it. This looks like a feature I will use purely to get the Achievement and then return to the "normal" save.

After some point in the campaign you have several missions fighting undead and as a result undead take the city of Talaves(?).

At that point if you are tring to enter it WITHOUT a necromancer you cannot do it, but if you try to enter it while having a necromancer in your army the lich here offers you to join him. If you agree you will lose all your living units except necromancers (you keep their equipment), but in exchange your MC will become a vampire (gets couple of common undead traits and lifesteal, not total class change) and you will get access to the undead city where you can hire undead units.

I didn't really play much of that branch (because I was disappointed by undead units), so I don't know whether or not the plot changes significantly.
