Unfortunately, after playing every RGG game on Steam at the time of writing except for Yakuza 5, Ishin, and Virtua Fighter, this is the first real miss. I didn't like a lot of the characters, the writing was pretty bad, the plot was convoluted and kinda dumb, and the combat wasn't enjoyable for me. On the surface it's a Yakuza game, but I think it truly lacks what makes Yakuza games special to me. I think if you aren't a diehard fan of the series and aren't committed beating every single game, this one is the most skippable one I've encountered so far, and the only one I would categorize as "bad."

Oh man, where to begin? This is up there in my favorite Yakuza games of all time, along with Yakuza 0 and Lost Judgment. The turn-based combat is greatly polished since Yakuza 7, and the side content is all phenomenal. Ichiban has become perhaps my favorite character that RGG has put out. I really enjoyed exploring Hawaii, and while I don't believe the main story is as amazing as the Judgment games or Yakuza 0, the side content and the interactions between all the characters more than makes up for it. They really succeeded in making a lovable cast of characters that make me wish they existed in real life so I could grab a beer with them.

Wasn't too much a fan of the story of this one. It had its touching moments, but this is one of the more skippable Yakuza games in the series. I still recommend it because fighting in the Coliseum is really fun, and I enjoyed a lot of the Akame missions, but at several points throughout my playthrough I just totally forgot what the main story was and had to remind myself what I was actually supposed to be doing.

Some of the best side content of any Yakuza game, though honestly the story and side content is why I love this game so much. I'm not really a fan of the turn-based RPG mechanics, and would've greatly preferred real-time action like other Yakuza games. I still highly recommend this game, but it might've been my all-time favorite Yakuza game if it weren't turn-based.

RGG really stepped up for this one. A morally grey story where there's few people who everyone could agree are "good" or "bad." Lost Judgment polishes a lot of the gameplay mechanics introduced in Judgment, and I ended up beating the base game in a weekend because of how hooked I got. I want to go back and explore more of the side content, but it's been a long time since a game hooked me as hard as Lost Judgment did. Only thing I wish is that I could experience it for the first time a second time, though I highly recommend playing Judgment first before Lost Judgment.

One of the best stories in a Yakuza game. Some of the new mechanics they introduce are a little unpolished and really start to shine in Lost Judgment, but this is a must-play for avid fans of the Yakuza franchise.

Some instability with the early releases, but a tremendously fun game that keeps managing to make me laugh.
