Saints Row 2 is one of the finest examples of "Don't judge a game by its cover". I passed on starting this game so many times even though it's in my library for several years now because I thought it's just gonna be a dark and gritty thug-themed open world game and this is probably the same reason why other players have overlooked this one as well but this game offers so much more. The open world map alone is packed and thoughtfully designed which offers A LOT of areas to explore and set pieces to discover despite the game's relatively small install size from a whole University district, an underground cavern and a sprawling shopping mall. There are also some interesting enterable interiors in this game besides the cribs and penthouses like the police department, a casino, and airport terminal building and each have their own unique environment. The map is populated with colorful NPCs like goths, cheerleaders, college students, skateboarders and a parody of Wendy's mascot. Besides the intricate details of the open world map, the story itself is genuinely compelling and turns the game into an actually great alternative to classic GTA titles from the 2000s like Vice City, San Andreas and IV. You can already see the age of this game which is visually closer to early 2000s titles like Half-Life 2 despite SR2 being released the same year as GTA IV (even with the Juiced patch graphics enhancements like the VanillaFXPlus and Better Ambient Occlusion) but the open world map, the gameplay and storytelling overdelivers. The radio station Generation X (which later got rebranded to Ultor FM) gives me an overwhelming dose of mid-to-late 2000s nostalgia.

This is my second playthrough of High on Life, first playthrough was on Xbox PC Game Pass over 2 years ago but only for the base game since High on Knife DLC wasn't released back then. The base game is still a blast the second time around but it still has some minor bugs even after 2+ years later. For example, when you portal back to Lower Dreg Town area to explore later after beating the boss there, some warp bases will spawn but the enemies won't move or attack even if you're not covered in "goop". Some G3 cartel enemies also glitch through some objects in certain areas. The game is still fun but these minor bugs could have easily been fixed by the devs since they're going to launch a sequel to this game and a lot of new players might pick this up in the future.

PSA: During the final boss fight of the main story, before you insert Kenny into Garmantuous, make sure to switch through the other guns more than once until they shut up since they have rare dialogues each for the last time which are easily missable since the game immediately instructs you to finish Garmantuous after Kenny's initial dialogue and end the game. Not sure if other players would care about these but they're neat hidden little details in the game.

First time playing and beating the DLC and noticed that it's a bit heavier on the dialogue compared to the base game despite being a shorter adventure. The new gun Harper has a very sweet voice acting.

Last PSA: Don't skip the end credits of High on Knife DLC lol.

This enhanced version has been out for over 8 months now and Rockstar still hasn't fixed the annoying forced 3D Audio that can't be disabled in the settings. Don't get me wrong, this is a very high quality port of the Enhanced version of GTA V since this version finally fixed some of the lingering issues from the Legacy version like the Extended Shadows Distance reset bug and poorly optimized Grass Quality but the game audio in this version is still whack and out of balance which partially ruins the game. Not everybody owns a Dolby or any other Spatial Audio hardware system to take advantage of the 3D Audio in this game which is the default for some reason. Some sounds like from phone calls and radios are too quiet while certain notification sounds gets too loud (for example, picking up a G's Cache in GTA Online). This issue is 100% related to the 3D or Spatial Audio implementation which can't be changed in the settings, there are other games that were also ported from the PS5 that had the exact same issue like The Last of Us Part I and Part II but those games were able to fix this by adding a "Traditional Audio Output" option in their audio settings. I don't know why Rockstar still hasn't figured this out, this issue has been around since release. I would still recommend this game for players who still enjoy GTA V or GTA Online but really hoping the audio issues get resolved in the future.

The storytelling and tone of the game vastly improved over the first one... the addition of the gravity gun made the overall gameplay better. The puzzles are still well-designed but not as challenging as the ones from the first game. The facial animations and expressions of the characters are extremely well-crafted especially on Alyx, can't believe this a game from 20+ years ago. Even the graphics of the environments like in White Forest are still comparable to some games that came out in early 2010s. Overall this is one of those games that is a must-play before you die, the entire experience is truly unforgettable.

The story is very engaging, starts a little slow in the research facility then go full turbo in an alien world near the end. The puzzles are the best part of the game, they're extremely well-designed and the game actually challenges the players to think and solve without spoon-feeding too much.

Very fun game but this port is still riddled with issues.

The "Save files have been corrupted" bug is STILL around even after over 5 years since this port's release. It's crazy they didn't bother to patch this bug which could only have been a quick fix for the devs that ported this game.

Audio is noticeably low even at max volume settings especially the characters' voices. I'm wearing headphones and sometimes it sounds like some of the characters are whispering during normal dialogue. I don't have this issue with the other games I'm playing so it's not hardware or software-related, it's only in this game.

The damage indicator is barely noticeable and even become a disadvantage at certain situations like when an OD scratches your character, you won't even notice it unless you're constantly looking at the HP bar.

Despite all these issues, the game is still very fun and would recommend it if you enjoy games like Marvel's Spider-Man and Saints Row series.

Beautiful visuals, fun ensemble of characters with excellent voice acting (especially Ariadne and Scheherazade), cool movement design especially Daisy's roller skating. Neat little detail from this game is the amount of unique dialogues for each agents, sometimes the enemy Legion grunts have special dialogues for specific agents and some agents have special dialogues to each other even during free roam. The only thing holding this game back from being a completely good game is the lazy mission design. Most missions involve infiltrating a tedious Legion Lair which a lot of previous players already pointed out as insanely repetitive like how did this even get past their QA testers? the mission where you unlock Red Card is possibly the worst one since it involves infiltrating 4 different Legion Lairs consecutively just to unlock 1 agent who wasn't even worth it. The final boss battle is also poorly designed - the guy 1 hits you regardless of your stats and you have to cower and hide behind the stairs then hit him once and dash repeatedly just to progress. If you can somehow overlook all these flaws, the game itself isn't really bad and actually has a decent campaign story. Felt like a multiplayer mode would have worked out if they only gave it a chance since they already have the set of characters, the lore and vibrant open-world to build on - imagine a multiplayer 3rd-person hero shooter in a futuristic open world sorta like Overwatch/GTA Online hybrid. Oh well, at least the campaign story was fun and could have been way better if they only reworked and trimmed down the Legion Lair portions from the game.

Felt like playing a mashup of heavily modded GTA IV with the superpowers & Mass Effect parody with the spaceship "romance" lmao. Graphics looks a bit outdated for a 2013 game.. this came out around the same time as GTA V & Tomb Raider (2013) but some of the textures look like they were modeled way back in early-2000s especially the mech suit and power armor in the finale you can see the heavy compression even on Ultra settings. Nonetheless, the game is still crazy fun and super hilarious.

The movements, the visuals and the atmosphere all just blend perfectly. This is one of those games you have to experience before you die.
