I bought this game when it was officially released because a lot of people were playing it. Few hours in I decided it's way too spooky for me.

Now a couple years later, after a little encouragement, I figured I'd pick it back up. It was as spooky as I remembered. But I kept going. Given I asked multiple times how safe something was, just to not chicken out. Making more progress in the game, carefully venturing to new areas, though mostly sticking to my known safe routes, I got braver, and in the end I wished it wasn't over. (Sure there still is plenty for me to explore but I think I'm good for now...)

The game is just beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. The plants, the fish, all that needed designed, exceptionally well done. Above ground movement is not this game's strong suit, but since most of the game happens underwater it's not really that big of a deal. And moving underwater is really smooth, I really appreciate how it's executed, it doesn't feel clunky, but very natural instead. Sounds in this game are awesome. So spooky at times, but so fitting.

I didn't play this game in early access, which I think is a good thing, since I got to experience the story and all the game elements naturally. Like I tell everyone when talking about this game: it is a shame I can never experience Subnautica for the first time again, but I'm glad to have experienced it. I absolutely adore the story. I love how it's not all straight forward, but you actually have to explore to find everything needed to progress.

Something about this game made it find its way to my heart. And there is only a handful of games that make me say that.

This game is really deep and has a lot of dark, disturbing themes to it. I need to agree with everyone that this is a game for mature audience only. Not just because it's creepy and disturbing as f, but because the dialogue is heavy and not really fit for younger people.

Oh and nevermind the age, if you're triggered by pretty much anything, this is not the game for you. :)

The gameplay is very simple, you don't need good reactions for this. Just need to follow the story and figure out how to move forward. The puzzles shouldn't be too hard, but sure I found myself stuck a few times. I also found it pleasant that you can do small choices, to play the game as you as Susan. The pace is slowish, but it fits the game just fine. You're going to play the game for hours, but you won't regret it. Hopefully.

At first I wasn't so excited about the graphics of the game, now I wouldn't have it any other way. And the sound, I found the quality very poor at the beginning, and well, it didn't really change, but that turned out to be my favorite thing of the game. The voices are unique and they fit the characters really well. I wished they never stopped talking. The music is cool too, it was a bit surpring at the beginning, but it actually fits the game. All these fit together well and make a good, fitting atmosphere for this game.

The story is simple. What am I even saying, it's not simple at all. It's a story of hope, disguised in depression and other depressing stuff. It is not a happy game, it won't make you feel good about the world. But it's a good interpretation of how life can get better, you just need to go through some utterly disturbing stuff first. :)

Now I'm not a fan of horror games, but for me it's not a reason to turn down a game that's appealing in other aspects. In this game, the horror is bearable: there's really no jump scares, though I was very spooked at times! And since good reactions are not needed in this game, I didn't need to panic either! (I totally did though.)

To end this novel I started writing, let me just say that if you enjoy meaningful dialogue based games, like puzzles, and well I guess most of all: are not bothered by the disturbing, dark themes and stuff, I highly recommend checking this one out.
