His factory allows children to die while his enslaved Oompa Loompa workers, kidnapped from South America and unpaid, remain complicit. This mirrors the 1800s sugar trade, where slave labor enriched the wealthy. Charlie’s survival can be read as a metaphor for the Haitian slave uprising, with the poor spared while the rich perish. Some intelligent people even interpret Wonka as a Hitler figure, fleeing to South America, enslaving workers, and destroying privileged children. I think we should throw everyone named Willy into the gulag and protect our bratty children from Their Kind.
