I'll start by saying that, visually and sonically, this game is absolutely great—everyone in the voice cast did a great job, the art for enemies, level assets and bosses is wonderful, and I'll be buying the soundtrack once it is available digitally.

However, that is all that I can sadly say is good about Antonblast. After two years of waiting, what came to me after I bought it was honestly a pretty disappointing experience, as the gameplay left much to be desired.

- To begin, Anton's movement was something that I became worried after the reveal of the Crash Team Racing-based speedboosts. In short, every time you dash, you have a few seconds afterwards to press the button to continue the dash uninterrupted, which if done well can massively cut down the time when moving across platforms. However, as shown on the very first demo when the Kickstarter was first fully funded, this mechanic was not incentivised, as the speedboost did not exist. This leads to gameplay in that early demo feeling much more naturally slower, which fits with the spirit of Antonblast being closely inspired by Wario Land.
However, because of the increased focus on speed in the current version, this leads to an unfortunate change: Anton is much more slippery, making him feel more speedy in comparison. This has the side effect of making any moment where you have to stop and move, such as the sliding platform segments of Cinnamon Springs or any platforming segment that uses boxes into a nightmare, as not only does Anton not jump comfortably high, but his slippery-ness translates to his in-air movement, making it easy to overshoot boxes or platforms.

- This effect is noticeable in pretty much every level, as all of them seem to have been made with the idea that you would be much slower naturally and with heavier movement, which means that pretty much every level suffers from bad handling. This isn't even mentioning how some transformations, like the Gacha Ball or Jetpack, have terrible control and gravity to them, especially the Jetpack being way too heavy and leading to too many overcorrections.

- The Hammer Spin, an essential movement tool across the game, has the interesting effect of the hitbox being much smaller than it would seem like, which like the Jetpack example, leads to any section that has projectiles to jump from with many moments of overcorrection, or even coming in too early, meaning you won't hit the projectile when it looks like you should.

- While I complimented the visuals at the start, I should mention that it can be quite messy and chaotic, visually busy when things are being destroyed or when the screen shakes, which is pretty terrible for the whole idea of speedrunning. This might not be a problem for some, but for folk that can suffer from seizures or have strained eyesight, the constant screen shakes and explosions might provide overwhelming. There is thankfully an option to immediately turn off the screen shake effect, although the explosions and debris effects will still be there.

If you're willing to deal with awkward and somewhat janky controls, then I truly, genuinely recommend you buy this game. However, if you're looking for something that worked out the very kinks this game is going through right now, I would recommend you try out Pizza Tower, or if you have the means, the Wario Land series. Otherwise, wait for a sale, or for the game to update with hopefully better controls.
