Very fun game although there's a really steep learning curve. The in-game tutorials and videos teach you some of the basic stuff but there's a lot more advanced cool things you can do in this game that you need to figure out yourself or look up tutorials on. I'm still on my quest to find out how to make everything from the start menu background videos- those self-building space elevators and automated custom ship printers. I've got nearly 500 hours on this game as of the time of writing and I'm nowhere near figuring out those complicated builds. Once you get started on a build however, it's hard to stop until you've finished!
While this game is more of an open-world sandbox survival, meaning it's up to you to do whatever you want in the world, there's also various "scenarios" both in the vanilla game and in the workshop that have more of a story feel to with, with objectives and such.
I've mostly played on my own in single player and even then I've had great fun, the experience is dozens of times better with mods as well. Think minecraft - but voxel based, in space and high tech.
Really recommend if you like building, survival, and space-themed stuff. The "engineers" bit in the name rings true as well, you'll inevitably come across a problem in your creations and you'll need to spend time to troubleshoot and figure out what's wrong. It's part of the fun and there's a great sense of satisfaction when you get it right!
That said, I feel like the game perhaps could do with a bit more optimization to run more smoothly. Vanilla game felt a bit more "alive" with the economy update but I feel like more could be done to make the world even more alive. Planets still feel somewhat empty. Also, water! Make it real.
My currently play through is on a modded world, with ~20 modded planets and moons along with over a hundred other mods. Gotta explore em all!
Just don't instigate the wrath of klang.
