My Primary race, the Kukulzans are zealots and masters of the book of spode, although they tend to be very pushy about religion. My Captain, Krassik the wise and dominant Zealot is more passive than the rest of his empires, he does missions with no help but the help of spode, an ally that will never vanish, even if crew is restricted.
