It's honestly a shame that they have lore like 'pelinal was a time traveling terminator playing buddy cop with what was either a minotaur or just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bull' and 'khajit went to the moon once' and 'eventually the clockwork city consumes the world and some guy cuts off his hands while making small talk with akhulakhan on the moon and then marries vivec' and then they just made a generic fantasy RPG about it.

It's unclear why they died off, I think, much like their relationship with mudcrabs or dreugh. I know the one Ald'ruhn is built around was killed in the 2e, which means they were contemporaneous with Velothi chimer, before they were transformed into the dumner.

If they did in fact go extinct because they were cursed to turn into mudcrabs, though, that would definitely explain why mudcrabs are such an angry pain in the ass all the time.

That one redoran town is built inside a different and extinct species of crab unique to Vvardenfel, I think. Not to rain on your parade.

I thought it was just a tall tale that Vvardenfell (and possibly Tamriel) used to be ruled by giant "King Crabs," but Treckie tells me that the one town in Morrowind that looks like it was constructed inside a giant crab shell is ACTUALLY constructed inside a giant crab shell, proving the story to be true. That means that massive mudcrabs used to rule the world until they were turned into the angry little dudes that they are now. Mind blown.
Now I can't stop picturing epic battles between enormous mudcrabs and dragons.
