Great group. I was actually looking for a group to let them know about the channel https://www.youtube.com/@xtremelinux which is basically Steam games on Linux
Theshadowman 21 Apr, 2023 @ 6:54am
No, I don't use these gadgets. A washing machine that runs Linux sounds like the dumbest thing in the world.
gluon 21 Apr, 2023 @ 6:52am
@Theshadowman Its almost like thats the reason I called it a kernel.... but anyway moving on. If you think you dont have any devices running linux I have news for you, you almost certainly do. Do you have a washing machine? Well that has a computer in it, running linux. Do you have a DVD player? Or a wifi router? Or a central heating control board? Almost certainly all running linux. And no, most examples of these things run a vanilla linux which can do most things without issue. Some do add binary blobs which are more there to stop users from being able to control those computers more often than not, they dont have proprietary code actually doing the heavy lifting normally. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, you clearly need to learn more about it.
Theshadowman 21 Apr, 2023 @ 6:41am
Linux is not an operating system. No one cares what's on "smart devices", I don't have any and even if Linux runs there it doesn't matter because it only manages memory and cpu, all functionalities run proprietary code.
gluon 18 Apr, 2023 @ 10:28am
@Theshadowman well android is Linux but even if you dont count that then basically every car computer runs linux, any smart devices you have in the house almost certainly run linux, basically all the servers running the internet run Linux. Whatever way you cut it the Linux kernel is the most common kernel out there by a clear mile.
Theshadowman 18 Apr, 2023 @ 9:38am
Android is not Linux
Oban 18 Apr, 2023 @ 3:13am
Linux is the widest spread OS there is. Everyone who says different is without knowledge and lives in a MAC or Windows bubble. Cheers

Proton is evil, it allows developers to be lazy and not target the Linux platform.

If anyone can't read the group name and understand what that means they should leave the group.

@Cy No you don't belong

One of qualities of real Adult is that he doesn't depend on other's opinions and does what he finds being right.
Growing up to listen others what you must or must not do is second childhood. :p2chell::teacup:
rusty_dragon 25 Nov, 2021 @ 6:47am
Truth about growing up is that people who talk about it are childish themselves.
They're just jealous of your hobby, while wasting time and money on stupid ♥♥♥♥.

Never.

It's time to grow up and stop playing video games.

Hi :) I've joined for a bit just to take part in the discussion in this thread about Proton's impact on Linux gaming... but it's a wall of text, so please check my thread in discussions ;). Cheers to all and stay healthy.

Few years back, with mixed feelings and much hesitation, I accepted Proton. Do I still belong?
rusty_dragon 19 Oct, 2021 @ 5:19am
@Theshadowman
There is sense in it. But we've already have "average Linux users" aka tech hipsters who think video DRM for Netflix is a good idea. Need to fix those people, somehow.
rusty_dragon 18 Oct, 2021 @ 2:37pm
>It will be responsible for no new Linux native games and that's a fact
To have new native Linux games be active about it and vote with your wallet. Pessimism of "Proton ruined everything" won't get you anywhere. And honestly just stupid, after all the years of fight, and all the progress we've achieved nowadays.
gluon 18 Oct, 2021 @ 1:19pm
@Theshadowman The thing is the average gamer isnt going to switch to Linux if they struggle to get their windows only games to work on Linux. Proton makes it very easy, then more people may use Linux and then more devs may support Linux. Its a difficult path to free the average person from proprietary malware but proton can be part of the answer
Theshadowman 18 Oct, 2021 @ 12:51pm
It will be responsible for no new Linux native games and that's a fact
rusty_dragon 17 Oct, 2021 @ 3:22pm
It's not apologizing. Sword is a tool. It's not good or bad. It's human who can use it for good or bad. Same with Proton.
Theshadowman 17 Oct, 2021 @ 2:00pm
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ apologizing like this fixes nothing
rusty_dragon 16 Oct, 2021 @ 4:49pm
Proton is just a tool. Tool can't do anything. For the fact, it's a great tool that empowers users.
It's people, who misuse the tool for native port replacement.
Theshadowman 16 Oct, 2021 @ 12:29pm
Proton made sure no one will bother to make a native Linux game again
rusty_dragon 29 Sep, 2021 @ 6:39pm
Thou Proton/WINE is still a preservation tool that allows GNU/Linux users to run Win only games if they want to. It's not a replacement for native linux games.
rusty_dragon 29 Sep, 2021 @ 6:38pm
>Hows Proton emu workin?
Proton is not an emulator. ) It's a Valve's cutom built of WINE, Win to Lin API translator.
You can check how Proton is performing for particular gams at protondb.com
gluon 29 Sep, 2021 @ 9:26am
@T3n pounds of flax yes proton is fantastic. I havent found any new games where there are any issues. There a few very old games (circa 1990's) which have issues like Lords 2 and UFO Defence but anything vaguely new I havent personally found any games with any issues

@ram Lets not start a flame war for no reason, banning someone just because you dont like something they say is really not a reasonable response either. If you disagree then start a discussion and have a proper debate
