Fun fact about that: I graduated last year and worked on a dissertation about The Vietnam War (well, a PBS 10-parter documentary series about it). It was both the most grueling and fascinating decision of my college years so far.
I hope I didn't disappoint y'all for not having a dissertation focusing on an '80s subject!
There was once a guy who posted a comment or two on 80's music videos uploaded to YouTube. He would express how scared he was of being bombed by the Soviets and that that decade was no fun to him. Now we might be able to sympathize with the lad, but he then proceeded to berate all of us for trying to enjoy the thing we came for (the music video itself) and called us idiots.
That was uncalled for, and I think the same applies to the deleted comments of the certain ex-member of this group. If you wish to be a caustic historian and critic, then I repeat, by all means create your own group and for your own purposes. We frown on members raining on each other's parades.
Let me restate the purpose of the group:
We're scholars of the pop culture; we focus on the cultural side of things, but politics and social do overlap to what we look at.
Yes, I am aware that such things are tragic and that we shouldn't overlook them, but then how are you going to enjoy life like that? It has been decades since those days, and if anything, we should dread over current events, not dread over history. If any of you wish to actually debate over such topics, then I suggest you walk out that door and make your own group; I will probably join.
