The origin of Canada's maple pride and identity is not actually related to the syrup, as tasty as it is. Mr. Muir, proud patriot and songwriter of “The Maple Leaf Forever” was inspired to write that song by a mighty maple tree on his street in Toronto in 1867. The song quickly grew extremely popular in English Canada and was considered at one point as a candidate to be the national anthem but because of its praise and references of Britannia, French Canada never really liked it thus preventing it from ever being the official national anthem. The maple syrup part was born out of pop culture, but maple pride is far greater than a breakfast condiment! The Maple Leaf Forever was such an important song in Canadian history that Canadians to this day owe their maple identity to it.

Canada's main export isn't even close to maple syrup and the overwhelming (+80%) majority of Canadian maple syrup is made in the province of Quebec. Fun fact! Maple pride and Canadian identity is so synonymous that our flag is none other than the Maple Leaf, one of the world's most identifiable flags. c:
