Well yeah those Ambushes happen everywhere and they force a massspawn!
So you got a bit of a challenge since Terraria were never hard. Now dig youself a hole once they attack and you cant fight them off! :-P

It's called an Ambush. They happen about 250 blocks from the spawn, and entail the mass spawning of a mob or mob type. For example, Slimes, Bunnies, Eaters of Souls, etc
