Interesting change to how VAC bans are displayed for Source Engine games
Previously, if you were banned by VAC in any of these games:
- Team Fortress 2
- Counter-Strike: Source
- Day of Defeat: Source
- Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

The VAC ban page would show you as being banned in each of these games, all attributed to 1 VAC ban.

However, recently, Valve has changed as to how the VAC bans themselves are displayed. Now, it shows only the one game that you cheated in and got VAC banned in. The account I'm posting from is actually VAC banned in Source games.[files.catbox.moe]

With this change, I actually had assumed that the account I am on is able to play games where cheating didn't occur, so I tested it out with Counter-Strike: Source.

The result? Still unable to play Counter-Strike: Source, despite the VAC ban page not displaying me as VAC banned from Counter-Strike: Source.[files.catbox.moe]

I did attempt to bring this up to Steam Support and ask them why did they change it, only to...talk to a brick wall, so to speak. They for some reason assumed I was talking about Counter-Strike 2 (no I wasn't) and gave me vague responses like "your VAC ban is applied correctly", even though...that wasn't what I was asking. So that went absolutely nowhere.

Basically - if you cheated in TF2, CSS, DoD:S or HL2DM but no longer see the VAC bans for the other games on your support page, the ban still applies and you are not able to play it.

I'm just curious why Valve is now misleading users with this. Wasn't the case in the past.

Because it is simpler to leave that information, long as it is, for the official kb article...

Okay but this leads to a lot of confusion to end-users though. Not everyone is necessarily going to go click on that article. Those that do - cool. But I don't understand the need from Valve to remove that information from being shown to the user upfront. It makes no sense to me personally.

That article should be directly linked on the ban page.

I don't want to sound rude... but somebody being "confused" about their VAC ban in any way doesn't sound like a priority to me.

Okay but you're forgetting that a majority of people will not click that and assume their bans have been removed for those other games, which they are not.

I don't understand Valve's reasoning for removing that from being shown upfront so my point stands.

People don't read pinned threads or even ToSs.

It’s not Steam’s responsibility to ensure that people read the TOS or pinned articles that they provide. The point is they provide it, if people refuse to read it that’s on them

This does not answer why they did show this information in the past but now do not.

There is a support page that explains this still. But you have to go read it.

And this goes back to the fact that the average user won't read, which baffles my why Valve just removed it from being shown upfront, despite this information being shown to the user upfront in the not-so-distant past. Back to square one with this, it seems.

Look, Valve is a company after all.. They put out the basics and that's it, they aren't going to hold your or anyones hand for that matter.. The information is there..

Besides, people don't even read the ban on their profile anyway.. People don't even understand the difference between a ban and a cooldown for example, you can't really expect from these same users to be able to read something... Because they can't and they won't...

We have daily posts of people not even caring about clicking on the infobox on their profile while screaming and kicking about something they have or dont...
