Cause diagonal turns the sandwich into triangles. Triangles fit better in the hand than rectangles. It makes it easier to eat because the points give you a better starting point for eating it.

Used to get jam/marmelade sandwiches in diagonal when i was a kid, i guess it depends on the sandwich.

Don't cut sandwiches. That's 100% more sandwich per sandwich.

Because when you cut the sandwich diagonally, the pressure of the knife cutting into the sandwich creates kind of a seal keeping the ingredients together better thus raising the deliciousness ten fold. When you eat a sandwich whole you create pressure points upon the sandwich which makes the ingredients slide around or even slide out of the sandwich.

It's like asking why use a spoon to eat ice cream when you can just use your hands.

Most of the time you don't. But some sandwiches - like a french dip, philly cheesesteak, or reuben - get messy real fast. It's too risky to eat them uncut.

Use a bagel for that sandwich and then there is no diagonal.

Only goblins would eat an uncut sandwich.

Diagonals improve it immensely..... Somehow.
