Would you ask for the engagement ring back after the breakup?
On the other hand, if you were the receiver, would you give it back?

An Engagement Ring is a conditional gift.
Yeah I would. Why would someone get to keep something when they breached their end of the deal? Also, yeah I'd give it back if my ex bought it. I don't want their stuff or their drama. Why would I keep it?
It would very much depend on the reason of the breakup

There's no such thing as a conditional gift lol. It's either a gift or it isn't.
Courts would disagree with you. . . .
I'd TAKE it back. As long as you have the receipts, it belongs to YOU.

Yeah, I just realised you were talking about america where everything is neurotic and insane.

Where *WOMEN are neurotic and insane.
i have been engaged and it was broken. i did not ask for the ring back, but i was given the ring back.
Some of us are not dumb enough to give the engagement ring.

When it was right- it was straight off to the wedding chapel.

How I feel too but reddit disagrees lol

I would give it back too voluntarily. Don't even need to ask.

thats very kind of you and personally what i think is the right thing to do, but had my ex not given the ring back i would have not cared too much, i suppose. its just a symbolic object, i had a lot of other things on my mind at that moment.

That's probably why there are so many divorces. I have seen people get engaged and the person they got engaged to change almost instantly. Engagement gives you more time to find out if the person you are planning to hitch up with is genuine. Imagine skipping engagement and going to the chapel just to get divorced in under a year. Good way to lose 60% of your assets.

Reddit has a lot of weird takes, so this doesn't surprise me. The types of people who would keep the ring are the petty type. Which is probably why someone broke it off with them to begin with.
yes if unfaithful, no if mutual. Certainly yes if i wish to be spiteful like immediately proposing to another woman infront of her.
Given that I would never burn a huge pile of money for such a thing. She can keep the ring and shove it up where the sun never shines if that's all she cares about.

A depressing number of our fellow males are dumb as rocks.
