I’ve got that SteamOS PC at home for testing before release

;)
It’s a little bit different to other distros with unique partition layout. I’m currently learning more how it works. It feels like 2in1 with its separate gamemode/console mode.

The installer is designed for system integrators and doesn’t let you choose drive or dual boot but it can be worked around.
Here is installer’s script (config) that can be edited or at least looked at to understand what will happen.

Fun fact: the installation is less than 1minute long. The configuration process after that is longer. First system update is 5s long. I’ve never seen anything that fast.
Given their stance on it for V, they aren't changing it for VI.
Wow is it April 1st already
Did you not know that you can play rockstar games on Linux?
most games work on linux anymore.
steam games, and nonsteam games alike.
I want to understand why I get more FPS in DeadSpace at 1080p comparing to Windows and other Linux distros in desktop mode.

I suspect the difference is likely bigger on a slower PC.
It runs xwayland in gamemode but only X11 in desktop mode. KDE + wayland on liveUSB. That x11 in desktop is surprising to me as well.
It’s an odd distro and this gamemode is interesting to test. I didn’t like it at first but I start to appreciate it more and more.

SteamOS (desktop mode) - 350fps
CachyO / Bazzite / Mint - 340fps
Windows - 303fps.
This makes me wonder if SteamOS does something for CPU performance. 7900xtx is generally not fast enough to cause problems for 7800x3D (xmp off) at 1080p but this specific benchmark is CPU limited in the village section. And I think Dead Space as well on other distros but not on SteamOS.
SteamOS has wayland as an option. The installer is in wayland. But the actual desktop after installation defaults to X11.
Shadow of The Tomb Raider has a weird bug (?) where I can't remove FPS cap in game mode what means I can't benchmark in game mode.

No frame cap, no v-sync, screen tearing allowed, steamdeck=0 %command% applied. Frame cap remains.
It's the only game I own with this behavior. Bad luck that it's one where it actually matters due to the benchmark.
