force closing is risky, but if you hit the quit button in the menu you will be fine. I would suggest setting up an account and hard saving every so often though. Never know when a game might get corrupted or a bad update goes through.

I mean I just close the game and all of my progress saves. I've played for 40 hours and all of it has saved

When I first started to play the game, I left it running for hours as well. I went looking for similar answers. I eventually found a file listing other files to be uploaded as part of cloud saving, in which was listed 'savegame.dat'. I went looking for that and found it in my user files area. I recommend you give that a go and back it up. So, if you're concerned about losing progress, try backing up this file and anything that looks similar.
