RimWorld

RimWorld

End game/ship to the stars
I believe I'd ended the midgame in my first no DLC Rimworld run as I have a few sets of Marine Armor, 20 pawns, and I've started researching spaceship related technologies.

It looks like there are two ways to win - either I build my own spaceship or travel to the other side of the planet to do the Ship to the Stars quest. So then if I understand correctly I can spend a lot of resources and build my own ship OR do the quest and instead fight a bunch of raiders while waiting for the quest ship to start up. Is one preferable to the other?

And if I do choose the Quest ship do I abandon my current base and just set up a new one at the location where the quest is?

I don't think either is better. I personally prefer to build my ship. Moving to towards the AI that will get us out is not easy either.
My suggestion? Save the game and try both.
You have to fight the same waves of enemies regardless. The question is whether you want to spend the time to get the resources to build it where you are, or spend the time to travel around the world. If you don't have any DLC it's probably going to be much easier to build your own where you are. The Odyssey DLC provides means of trivializing the travel one though, but also adds a much better "ending."
