Game itself is in terms of content and combat really strong now. The weak state at launch has been fixed in those regards and it is imo a better base game now then World and Rise.
Biggest issue is still perfomance, so that might be a problem, but you can bug it, try it out for an hour and if it runs well, you will have fun with it and if not, refund and wait for the perfomance updates in early 2026 (whatever they will do) and the next sale, which will surely come.
But it might be your thing, so who knows.
How do you make a system that is more convoluted than World when it comes to playing with your friends.
If you want to go do quests with your friends you need to join a link party, but then you quickly realize that you can't explore the 'open world' together. It's open to you but not to your friends. So then you join an environment link which closes the 'open world' to others in the lobby and makes it just for you and up to three friends.
However, you realize you can't post quests at the quest board. You need to go out and hunt together by initiating a fight with a monster while in the environment link. However those field quests can also be joined by the players in the lobby that were originally closed off from your 'open world' by that very environment link. You apparently can't see them in your world but they are very much still there and can join even without you firing an SOS flare.
Also don't think that you can invite people to your environment link on your terms. In World, you could simply join someone's Guiding Lands mid fight and get right to helping them. In Wilds you can't invite anyone to your environment link while on a hunt. You need to wait until the hunt is over.
It's the better part of a decade newer than World, on a newer engine, and yet the MP is more convoluted. This is the one area where I thought the open world would have made MP a slam dunk.

Nvm, OP already had it
That perfomance is still a big problem. Most negative reviews are about the perfomance, rightfuly so if I might ad, but if it runs well for you, that yeah, a lot of the problems the release version had, have been fixed.
You when you have no idea. I played Rise on the Switch (as I said) and online on the Switch was not better (thanks NIntendo). I have no idea how Rise online runs on Steam or PS.
I truly can't believe how they managed to screw it up and make it more messy and confusing than World was.
It's no different from World really.
The game itself, though? It seems to be doing alright now, though I've only just started playing again since having left after Mizutsune... Initial reaction is positive.
