A comment on another thread said to disable Steam Input in the games settings when you right click it in your Steam library, and it seemed to work somewhat.
I can now play with the controller plugged in, but nore wirelessly

But with other games, I found that I had to either enable steam controller driver or disable it to get a controller to work. Maybe the same thing happened with the patch since in the notes it said something about activating Steam controllers with this game...
It's in the steam library properties... somewhere. I'm going from memory, here....
I tried it, and I can play using my controller with this program. I would prefer not to, but this seems to be the only way for me. I have playstation buttons showing in game tho, instead of x-box. Doesn't bother me as I have used both controllers, but for some this might be a nuisance as well as downloading additional weird programs just to be able to play a game.
